Podcast Interview Preparation

Thank you for considering being a guest on our podcast!

The Patent Myths Podcast:

Patent Myths focuses on patents in business. Our interviews come in two flavors: interviews with experts in intellectual property, and an “IP Makeover” where we dissect the business decisions behind a company’s patent strategy.

The “IP Makeover” is designed for two things: (1) looking back at the strategies that got you to this point and (2) making suggestions for how to move forward. Russ will give his recommendations and answer any IP questions you have, and give you a long term strategy and short term tactics to move forward. The “IP Makeover” is a friendly interview where we are in your corner, helping you succeed, so please use it to ask any questions or discuss any IP issue, no matter how complex.

Our Audience:

Our audience are aspiring inventors and entrepreneurs, as well as angel and venture capital investors, all of whom want to de-mystify the IP process. They enjoy the entrepreneurial journey, but IP is one of those “black boxes” full of mystery, risk, and uncertainty.

Our audience are struggling with the decisions around IP: how can I protect my business? In the case of investors, how do I know that a portfolio company has a good patent strategy? We try to unpack the business issues around these decisions and help build a framework for making solid business decisions.

Recording Technology and Environment:

For a remote interview, we will use Zoom to conduct and record the call (audio only). Zoom uses the internet for the call connection, and facilitates recording of the interview. Zoom is free, and you don’t need an account. If you will be using an Apple device to access Zoom, you may need to download the Zoom app first (see instructions here). Please access Zoom at least 5 minutes before the scheduled interview to allow yourself enough time to access Zoom and get connected.

You will need:

1. An internet browser (like Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari) installed on a computer with a fast connection to the internet.

2. An external microphone and headphone attached to your computer are required. The built-in computer microphone and speakers will not work, as it reduces the sound quality significantly. In most cases, for home-based recording, a dynamic (cardioid dynamic) microphone is best since it does not pick up as much background noise (as compared to a cardioid condenser microphone which tends to pick up more background noise).

3. A quiet and private environment with minimal background noise and no interruptions. Remember to turn off your cell phone, and close any applications on your computer that create sounds or alerts.

The Interview Flow:

Our goal is to record a “friendly” interview episode that provides value to our listeners and to you and your business. There are no negative surprise or trick questions, and we will work together to finalize an Interview Episode Outline document. In that document, we will define the main topics or subject areas of the interview, and the primary questions we will ask you. This process will minimize any surprises during the interview and allow you to prepare for the questions ahead of time, while still resulting in a conversational format.

At the scheduled time of the interview, we will begin with a brief pre-interview and sound check. Please plan for a total of 45 to 60 minutes for the entire interview session.

After we record the interview we will process the raw recording, perform any edits, and produce the final podcast episode. We will let you know when the final episode is published, and we invite you to use and share the podcast episode as you desire (i.e. share it on your online sites).
